This morning when we went to gravel vac the tank, hubby noticed a little molly fry swimming at the bottem. He panicked and tried to catch the female who gave birth. I told him to leave her alone, but he insisted on chasing her with the net. Well, we managed to catch 2 fry, but one does not look like it's going to make it. The female stopped giving birth as well. I know it's from the stress. Is there any chance once she calms down that she will resume giving birth? Or is she done with this batch and will probably abort any other fry she has? She is now moved to the "breeding tank/nursery". What are our chances?

I'm pretty darn ticked off at this.

once they have stopped they are unlikely to restart the same birthing they were in before, so will just have to wait and b patient for the next batch to come along.

let the female out of the breeding trap this will only stress her more now and before you know it it will be around to birthing time again!!

next time dont tell your husband you have seen fry :good:

She's not in a breeding trap. The fry are in a breeding net. She is freely swimming in a tank that I had planned to move her to before she had the fry. Unfortunately she started having babies before I got her moved.

Actually, my husband saw the fry before I did.

well for now thats all you can do, she will calm down and im sure she will be producing babies again soon :)

how big is your breeding net? i still personally prefer catching the babies rather than putting the mum in a trap or net but of course the choice is yours :)

good luck with your next batch :good:

Well you make mistakes your first few times when your fish breed. But you just have to learn from your mistakes. It would be best if she did have a tank to herself were she can give birth or get a breeding net as you have said. When the fry are born you can keep them in the breeding net, but will soon outgrow it. Also one time I had my female swordtail jump into the fry net were the fry were and she ate her babies. It was weird because all day she was attempting to eat them and then she succeded. I learned my lesson from that and bought a fry tank. But today I have 49 fully grown guppy/swordtails that were once fry. I dont know what to do with all of them. So I am selling them to forum members.

The first time we had fry my daughter almost drank them. I was moving them to a fry tank and had nothing to put them in so I brilliant person that I am put them in a blue drinking glass since I had nothing elso available at the time. My daughter thinking it was her soda picked it up and almost drank them. Talk about freak outs. Now I use an old jar labeled fish.

Here's a picture of the single surviving molly fry:
