I'm planning to switch to a black sand substrate at the same time I upgrade my lighting to a more reasonable level and had a few questions about growing plants in it.

1. How deep should the substrate be? the same as gravel in a planted tank or a bit thinner?
2. Will sand make the plants less resilient to being pulled up and moved?
3. Is there any way to make the sand more nutritious that wont affect the look and doesn't require layering? I'm pretty sure ill just end up with a mix if I try layering a more plant friendly substrate below it. I'd like to be able to grow heavy root feeders like sword plants if possible.
