I am trying to culture green water to feed to my daphnia (which I will then feed to my fish). I have heard you just take some rotting leaves and put them in a thing of water and leave it in the sun. Is that true? Any particular type of leaf or just any lettuce?

i wouldn't let anything rot in a tank. just place the tank in direct sunlight and you should get green water.

remember green water is algae, so apart from sunlight, you'll want some nutrient source in there too. Old tank water, or some fertiliser.
I was looking for food source for daphnia too recently and it was mentioned, brewers or bakers yeast (the live stuff not the freeze dried) mixed in solution is also a suitable source of food for daphnia
