Ugh... Not sure if i'm suffering from a bout of green water or not. Tanks looks cloudy from the front. From the side it looks green, but this could be the reflection of the plants on the cloudiness in the water. I added some ghost shrimp a few days back but I keep finding corpses, which makes me think it might be a bacterial bloom.

Suggestions?

Hello there
i had a big problem a while back with this myself . first the water went very milky then it went green and i mean green in a big way .it was there for over 3 weeks .in the end i got a loan of my brothers UV and it was all clear in about 4 days .and the good thing was it never came back even after i give him his UV back .

I can verify the fact that a UV Sterilizer will clear it up. I have used one on 3 different occasions on new set ups. Green water is generally present in new tanks. I just went through it again in the tank I changed the sand in. I hooked my UV up to it and it was crystal clear in lest than 48 hours. I have taken it off again now and the water is still clear.

Green water will eventually clear up and it isn't really bad for the fish, just looks bad to us. Water changes will provide only temporary relief simply because you have replaced green water with clear water.

I got green water when i discovered i had bought the damn 50/50 bulbs in my hood...
Once i swapped em out for the 6700K's everything fixed itself :)

Id do a big water change and turn out the lights for a couple days... hopefully thatll fix it :)

Its usually some sort of ammonia spike or the presence of ammonia that triggers it, have you done anything unusual with the tank in the last week or so, do you have an ammonia testkit to check the tank water.......anyway regardless if it isnt that bad do a blackout for a couple of days this will cure less serious outbreaks of green water, 50% water change beforehand and clean the filter and another 50% water change straight after the blackout is over.

Nothing unusual to the tank, but the dead shrimp corpses that I keep finding in the tank could be the cause! I had the lights off all day today, came home and it was looking a little better but still kinda hazy. Cleaned the fitlers, did a 50% water change and it looks perfect again. Hope it stays like that!

The most recent major change to the tank was a couple of weeks ago when I took out most of my fast growing plants and added slower ones....
