i'm starting to take an interest into these fishes and it turns out that many of its keepers mentioned how aggressive this fish can be. most of them quote that its aggressiveness is at its peak during breeding or when defending their spawn. then my question is, would a single green terror exhibit the same level of aggression? i'm planning to keep it with my fire eels in the furture when my 180 gallon arrives.

thanks.

I don't have the most experience when it comes to cichlids. But, I am a big believer in give a fish some space and the troubles they cause will greatly diminish. I have never seen any significant aggression from a cichlid when it is the only one of its kind in a tank (I understock my tanks). But, each fish is different. While one fish will be perfectly fine, another will will try to dominate a portion of or even the entire tank. You just have to try it and see. But, if you understock the 180 gallon tank, then I'd bet a green terror will do just fine.

i'll remember that. yeah the main reason i'm getting only one is to minimize aggression. i'm just afraid that it would take it out on my fire eels. currently they are still kinda small, hence only in the 75g. anyone else has experience with green terrors?

yes the smaller the tank the more agrestion,as usual....should be fine,i know alot of people with green terrors...i personally have a female in with two oscars/jag/vieja/severum/plecs/hoplo catfish and she keeps herself to herself...i did put here in my 3ft tank with my keyholes and in one night she beat them up<not bad but think this proves that space is the essence :good:

i had on over stocked 75, stock list was as -

2x 2 inch Dovii (got them to 5 - 6 inches in this tank)
2x 2inch JDs (got them to 4 - 5 inches in this tank)
1x 12+inch male Jaguar Cichlid
4x 4 - 5 inch pictus cats
2 x 3inch royal plecs
O'yeah and a 7inch green terror

when i put jag 2 in

no aggression in the tank what so ever, untill i put a 2nd male 7inch Jag in the mix then the gt started fighting with him all the time, had to take the Jag out or the GT would have killed him off

befor i had this mix i had the same gt but he was in with a 15inch walking cat and some 3inch oscars, same again NO aggression untill i added a 2nd male gt the same size, then all hell.........

then i got a 90 and a 12 inch rt, put the 7inch Jag in there with him and the Dovii, mover the GT in there as well and then it was the Jag who was beeting the GT, that was the same Jag that was in the 75 that was almost killed by the GT

so i guess its like i always say "try it" thats the only way

What tank size do you keep that sort of mix of fish in? Keyholes are quite peaceful fish and don't really stand a chance against a GT no matter the tank size.

Overstocking cichlid tanks works on the basis of, no one fish will take a beating from each fish, they will go after each other, all having occasional fights. This means higher numbers of fish not overstocked tanks with fish that grow too big for the tank etc. There has been more success with this method in Mbuna tanks than with New world cichlids in general, this would be due to things like adults protecting fry etc.

GT's can vary from highly aggressive to push overs, your best bet would be to try it but have a back up plan if it doesn't work (spare tank, divider, somewhere to take it) just incase.
