Today when I woke up i went straight to my aquarium to feed and I didnt see me GSPs. So i started looking around and I noticed them both inside of the cave and they only came out to eat for about 30 seconds and quickly went back into the cave. My water temp is 80 F, 7.8 pH, 0 nitrites and nitrates. Are my GSPs breeding? :p

I am more curious how you have zero nitrates

:hyper: sure they wasnt just having a lay in? My gsp scares me as he is no where to be seen then he charges me from behind the pump, or rushes out from his cave as if he has been busy... :shout:

We have 0 nitrate in all of our tanks mainly through using RO water. ;)

My discus tank had 0 nitrates. I did 20% daily water changes though.

This would be the first DOCUMENTED case of gsp's spawning. I remember an unconfirmed report of one over on The Puffer Forum not to long ago.

In Baensch's aquarium Atlas (either 1,2 or 3) he documents a successful spawning.

yes but how do you MAINTAIN zero nitrates?

RO has zero when added. Fish crap -> crap turns to ammonia-> ammonia turns to nitrites-> nitrites turn to nitrates->....Profit!?

I did daily water changes to keep the nitrates at zero. My tap water did have 0 nitrates to start with though.

Two big external filters, regular water changes and maintenance. I understand the process of fish "crap" as you put it especially owning Plecos.
We've never struggled to keep our Nitrates at 0 so must be doing something right!
