has anyone kept this fish?

i am planning on a 125ltr, 33US gallon tank. with tetratec1200 external, plus 300w external hydor heater, and possible a koralia 1, if needs be. turnover should be around 8-10 times.

with this set-up in mind i could only have 1 gsp. what i want to know is what is it like to keep, being the only fish i definately want something thats intresting, and intelligent and that has a huge character, plus i want to regard it as a pet...... but what is your experience with these, and do you recommend them?

cheers

I have 3 of them, among many other puffers. Actually I'd get 2 of them. I have 2 in one tank and the other is in another tank with some other puffers. Are you going to keep them in brackish water? I seem to have better luck with the GSP's in brackish, although having said that, one of mine is in freshwater.
They are very interesting, and all puffers are intelligent. I love to watch my two, they actually lay on the bottom of my tank, resting under the plant leaves. And when it's feeding time they come out and look at me as if to say, "we're hungry, are you going to feed us now?"
I have about 55 puffers and just can't seem to get interested in other fish.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask.

regards,
Suz

My experience with these was short lived as my tap water has 50ppm nitrate and he eventually succumbed. they are gorgous looking fish though, always active and will recognise you as the person who provides food. I'd definately think about getting another one at some point in the future.

i have read that they dont like nitrate, which is good news for me as my nirtate is under 3ppm.

thanks guys, i rekon i could only have 1, and i would be rasing the salinity over a period of time to get to high brackish.

anyone else keep them

This puffer is totally brackish and should never be kept in freshwater. They are fantastic fish, I had two, they are like little puppy dogs. I chucked them slugs, baby snails, spiders, prawn, tuna, salmon, along with mixed packs of frozen foods from the LFS. Snails and cockles/muscles are important to keep their beaks trimmed. If they get too long you have to cut their teeth using nail clippers.
Very very messy though, so as much filtration as poss. Also remember cycling a brackish tank is essential, but you cannot use media from a freshwater set up as the salt will kill the bacteria. Puffers need 100% immaculate water conditions, so 30% weekly water change is a must.
Good luck anyway, they are great fish. I had to rehome Burt and Ernie due to new baby and no space, but I miss them loads x

thanks, what sized tank did you keep yours in, i have a 33gal, some people are saying have 2, but i have read that i will only be able to have 1

I had them in a tank too small, about 100l I think, but it was totally overfiltered and was packed with silk plants to break up territory and line of sight. You wont be able to grow plants because of the salt (maybe a few but it its v.v.hard!) The reccommended is 1 as they have a tendancy to nip, but I can only tell you my experience, and mine got along fine. They used to sleep on a leaf of the plants! Id say if you want two, get two, but you must have a back up plan if they start to bicker, i.e give it to me!!
