Sorry Mark I have no idea but it looks the same as what one of my gourami's have. It went quite red but now its just a lump, it doesnt bother the fish, I tried anti bacterial meds but it didnt go, I think mine is some sort of tumour. Hope someone else can help.

Is the growth hard looking. Or does the growth look soft like filled with fluid.
Just want to make sure the growth dosn't resemble a cauliflower.

It could be a tumour.
All you can do really is try a bacerial med in issolation.

Dosn't look like there any strands coming out of the lump. As that can mean parasite.

ok have got some bacterial meds will give it a try cheers

Good luck mark.

thanksa wilder... assuming it is a tumour what would his prognosis be?

It depends if it's a fast growing tumour or slow growing tumour.
I would just keep him comfortable. If he goes downhill I would think of ending his suffering.
Some fish can last quite along time with tumours.

well its not looking too good. i have noticed this morning a 2nd lump appeared on his throat just like the 1 on his gill. not really sure what to do for the best

edit: have just noticed 1 at the base of his tail too.

i have been roccomended to try adding aquarium salt at a ratio of 1 teaspoon per 2 gallons?

Mark, I know its hard but try not to worry. My snakeskin gourami has had her tumour now for 6 months + the ones on her body have now dissapeared but she still has the one under her mouth. I had her seperated for a while but now she is back in the main tank it doesnt bother her one bit (just looks a bit unsightly). She is eating ok and still growing. If it is a tumour the only thing you can do is just keep an eye on the poor chap, fingers crossed its the same sort as my gourami has and he is fine.

he seems to be ok in spite of it at the moment swimming/feeding normally etc. its just the 1 in his gill that could cause a problemm if it grows . for now im just making sure i keep pristene water and keeping an eye on him. am trying some bacterial meds too. cant really see that i can do much else .

Just want to make sure it not lymthocystis.
Growths will look like a cluster of eggs, a cauliflower or smooth lumps. They can come in the colours of pink, white, brown.

Get you some info.

Lymphocystis

Symptoms:

Fish infected with Lymphocystis will present with clusters of whitish, berry-like growths on the skin and fins. These "clusters" may resemble small clutches of eggs or cauliflower (hence, it is sometimes called Cauliflower Disease). They will be clearly visible and may even become extremely large. This disease often affects the fins first.

Cause:

Viral infection. The virus will eventually kill the fish if it is unable to mount a strong enough immune response as the virus rampages through the fish’s tissues, destroying its cells.

Treatment:

As with all viral infections, there is no suitable cure or efficacious treatment; however Quick Cure claims to be helpful. I have also heard of people who trim the fish's fins, followed by several baths in Malachite Green. Fortunately, this disease is uncommon and in some cases, infected fish are able to recover quickly without treatment.

Lymphocystis is highly infectious. When infected cells from the fish’s skin or fins burst the virus is spread throughout the aquarium and can remain contagious for periods of up to two months. Fish not showing symptoms should be removed from the aquarium and placed in quarantine, away from other fish, for at least 60 days. Note, remove uninfected fish, not the other way around because the aquarium has become contaminated. The infected aquarium should be emptied and thoroughly disinfected before returning any fish to it. Do not use soap to clean the aquarium.

i dont think it is lymphosistis the lumps dont resemble cauliflower or clutches og eggs they are single lumps almost cyst-like in appearence .

EDIT: have just done a google image search and the lumps on my sev look nothing like the pics of lymphosystis.

Ok. Just wanted to make sure.

All I can suggest is phoning a vet to see if he would perscribe an antibiotic.
But you would have to use the antibiotics in issolation.

If they are tumours the antibiotics wouldn't cure the lumps.
