Hi all, i am posting this here because i dont know what group of fish the "scat" is in. Anway, im dying for this pair of scats for sale in New Zealand, and its for my 4 foot (see below its my largest tank), would it suit for it, and do they need to be in brackish water or can they be in normal freshwater?

Heres The Link

Thanks All

Green scats, Scatophagus argus, must be kept in either a brackish or marine aquarium, whichever you prefer. They cannot be kept in a freshwater aquarium indefinitely; if you try to do so, you will be constantly fighting random health problems including pop-eye and lymphocystis. Been there, done that, and quite literally written the book (on brackish water fishes, no less).

On the other hand, you might be surprised how many so-called freshwater fish will do very well in a brackish system alongside scats. Scats make simply wonderful pets and become extremely tame, though at least some reports suggest they have slightly venomous dorsal fin spines, so be careful handling them.

Cheers, Neale

Edit: the ones in the photos are still relatively small, likely less than a year old, which is why they're still happy enough in freshwater. Do understand that scats grow to considerable size, around 40 cm in the wild, though 20 cm or so is more typical in captivity.

Thanks alot Neale, i was interested in them because i have a large tank, but no large fish, what cool looking freshwater fish (not cichlids as the tanks planted) would you recommend going in to the 4 foot with the current stocking. BTW im not interested in angels iv already got some and im looking for a cool looking weird fish. Thanks
