Hello people,

Firstly I'd like to say hello as I am new to the forum. My wife and I live on the South Coast of England and have two tanks, one a cold water one with goldfish and weather loaches in, and one a 200litre tropical tank with an odd collection of fish that either came with the tank when we were given it 18months ago, or have been bought by us since then. In the tank are:

12 Golden barbs (more on these later)
2 Pictus cats
1 big pleco
1 clown loach (all his mates died of the dreaded whitespot soon after purchase, but he battled through and is now a healthy plump 10cm)
1 kissing gourami
1 yellow gourami
1 blue gourami
1 humbug catfish (who we hardly ever see)

Until yesterday we also had a lovely keyhole cichlid who we rescued from a friends tank where he was being bullied. He lived a happy life with us for a year or so, but on returning from a month away we found him completely bloated with dropsy (my friend who was loking after the tank though he was pregnant!), and I sadly had to finish him off yesterday.

Anyway, the main reason I'm posting is that our barbs are becoming a bit of a problem. When we bought them they were small lively little things that eagerly fed on whatever we put in the tank. They are still lively and feed on everything, but they are now big and FAT and seem to be eating enverything we put in there, to the exclusion of the other fish. I am worried that my gouramis seem to be getting thin and even the big pleco is looking a bit small of belly. It seems that if I feed them more, they still just hoover it all up. The only one that is getting his fill is the clown loach, who is just as pushy as the barbs. Anyway - does anyone have any advice on what to do here - I have heard that barbs will do OK in an unheated goldfish tank so am considering putting half of them in there, but it does get pretty cold here in the winter. ..

See my sig file for my tank occupants.
I only have 3 golden barbs, but they are the same as your 12 - greedy blighters! They have been living in an unheated tank for well over a year now, and are totally happy. I would say that if you were to move half of yours into an unheated tank they would probably be OK.
My tank temperature is typically around 22-23oC and stays quite constant.
Also, at my LFS they have had golden barbs in one tank at the tropical end of their shop and some in another tank at the unheated end. When I asked which they should really be in, the shop assistant said they can be either / or.
Well, that's my experience anyway. Hope this helps a bit.
By the way, welcome to the forum!
