The back of my tank has a few plants that are established and growing, as well as a lightly secured air stone. I'm having trouble vaccing up the back of the gravel. The front is easy, and looks spanking clean, but the back stays a darkish yellow and really doesnt look nice.

In short:
How to vac up without uprooting plants?

Only touch it onto the substrate at the back rather than digging in as usual. This will remove the upper layer of mulm and do enough to prevent a pH crash, but it won't disturb the roots of your plants :good:

Also,I don't know what you do already, but I've completely taken the big tube thing off my gravel cleaner and just use the hose, makes it much easier to poke into small places.I've got planting in the back of my tank and tend just to gently push the hose into the bottom of the stems and suck up what I can.
