Just wondering is anyone has every tired a gravel tidy in a planted tank? Am thinking it may restrict root growth? If not then a great way of keeping sand and substrate separate?

I bought one a while back for very little on ebay. The holes are pretty tiny. As shown below. Suppose It depends on the plant size but a lot of larger root systems will be restricted.

I would have thought that once the plant roots have got through the mesh it will be a hell of a job to get them out again, should you want to tinker with your lay out. You might end up accidentally lifting the mesh.

Dave, this is true of many of the large plants in general, i.e. lotus lilies have huge root balls, so to remove them you end up ripping out half the tank at the same time . I read once that for these its just best to cut the top of at gravel level and leave the roots behind. They will rot anyway. Well that's what Ive been told never actually done it :)
