I am soon to be setting up a new 4 1/2ft aquarium. I want to use gravel on one side and sand on the other where slate caves will be made. I don't want it to get it all mixed up though. Does anyone know how I can keep the substrate seperate once the water is in? What are gravel tidies and how do they work?

I no some one use wood to seperate gravel from sand, but don't no if i worked.

Maybe you could get one of those dividers that seperate bettas and cut it so it is only at the bottom with the gravel/sand is and stick it between the two substrates and their you go, problem solved. :)

How about breaking up the sand and gravel with an area of some larger rocks, pebbles and/or driftwood as a dividing line? You could also use some smaller plants in there to help distinguish the two areas. Crypts come to mind for a start.
