Just wondered what is better for the average community planted aquarium

Gravel or sand

Depends on which plants and fish you want to get.

Most things like sand and plants root better in sand.

Although sand can clog your filter.

Corys prefer sand. Sand is easier to clean. Sand (in my opinion) looks far nicer and natural. Plants are fine in either sand or gravel (considering the gravel is quite fine)

I have my plants in a sand gravel mix, I find the gravel allows easy growth of the plants roots and stops/ prevents the sand compacting down and causing later problems with gas build up in the sand.
