Gravel Or Sand?

Yep, most play sand is ok. It won't buffer the water to help keep the ph up, though. It won't matter if your not trying to keep the ph higher like their natural habitat is.

I have very hard water here. Keeping the PH up is not an issue, in fact it's so damn hard it's almost off the scale.

Hi, my malawi love the crushed coral substrate,always looks very fresh and clean,but would probably not look right with "cobbles" or some other rocks? just a thought.

I have seen people do a mix of gravel and sand - gravel towards the back, sand towards the front. Personally I'm not keen and I'd just go for sand, but it might be worth looking into.
