I've seen a biorb recently with gravel in it instead of the obligatory ceramic media. Plants were well established and fish seemed happy (?!). I've got a betta in a 35l biube with ceramic media and I'm not happy about his fins trailing on the rough edges, especially as he seems to like rooting about at times and sometimes does his scales damage. Also plants are not exactly thriving.
Does anyone else use gravel instead? Any hints/ problems?
