I emptied my tank earlier and used the gravel cleaner syphon, It started sucking up the gravel if i got to close so i moved it away. But it does not clean under the gravel properly unless it is close?

Poo will not sit on top of the gravel, so you would want to agitate the gravel with the vacuum. The vac shouldn't suck up the gravel.

Stick it right into the gravel. The gravel will tumble in the water and falll back down whilst the lighter debris will be pulled away.

I have finer gravel than yours in one of my tanks and it does not get pulled away.
In my other tank i use a gravel vac the size of a torpedo and the gravel doesnt get sucked away!

Loads of vids on youtube.

Unless you get some kind of small mesh to put inside the larger end of the gravel cleaner, say half way up, so that the gravel cant get sucked through?

My gravel gets sucked up a wee bit but always drops down again. None of it is taken out, its good to get it right under the gravel, cleans it better than just hanging in just over the top of the gravel.

The gravel should get sucked up and tumble around inside the large tube of the gravel vac. It should not enter the hose though. If your gravel is very fine, it certainly can get sucked up.
