I don't have a definite answer, but, I would have thought you could grow any with Gravel. I believe it's only since the recent trend of Sand in the Tropical Aquarium that people have been debating the pro and cons of sand and gravel. HTH and hope that made sense.
Sand can actually be worse! It doesn't let the roots breathe as well as gravel does.
I use natural gravel in my planted tank, and a few weeks ago I put a thin layer of laterite on top and mixed it in to the gravel as best as I could. It really helps!
