Right then -- first off, I think the cycle is coming along. Haven't seen any nitrites yet, but the ammonia is MUCH lower than it was. pH is still between 7.4 and 7.8, today's ammonia reading was 1.0 (did a 25% water change.)

I finally found a put big enough to boil the piece of grapevine I bought when the tank as set up. So now it's in the tank, the fish love it, but wil it be safe for them? I've read about a fungus growing on it and polluting the water. Of course, the lfs said it would be fine, but I'm not so sure.

Does Prime screw with nitrite readings? I've been using it instead of Bio-Safe, and the bottle says it detoxifies nitrite and nitrate.

If there's no nitrite reading by the end of the week, the fish are going back to the store and I'm going the fishless cycle route. But I'm afraid the lfs won't take them and hold them for me ...

ETA: can I turn the filter off when doing a water change? It's a lot easier that way, since I can just turn off the whole power strip instead of reaching under the cabinet to unplug the heater and air pump. I'm usually done in under fifteen minutes, so I doubt the bio-wheel would dry out.

Fish are doing fine, and I swear that plec has grown!
