A couple days ago my male dayi gourami started acting listless and was hiding under the filter. I couldn't see anything wrong with him so decided to do a water change in hopes that was all it was.

The next day he was acting the same but I couldn't see him very well so I netted him out into a jar and realized his top fin and tail fin both the points were black and falling off and his stomach looked swollen. I figured it was some kind of fin rot so after researching I found out it was bacterial fin rot. I did another water change the day before yesterday and treated the tank with JBL Furanol. Today I just got back from being out to find him dead :-(

I'm worried the female might be getting the same thing too. She's acting slightly listless and has her fins are a bit clamped. Her stomach is a bit swollen too but sometimes hers looks like that depending on if she's full of eggs or has eaten a lot. Am I right in my diagnosis? JBL furanol is for the treatment of gram negative and gram positive bacteria and lists "Aeromonas" as one of the thing it's for.

I'm feeling worried now because this is the first fish lost I've had in a long time..usually if I have a problem I am quick to catch it and medicate and the fish survives. Not that I have many problems usually only when/if I get new fish. This time however I've added no new fish to the tank..the only new thing I added since the male got sick and died was a piece of wood from my lfs. I'm starting to think I saw that piece of wood in one of their display tanks before..and I know their fish get diseases sometimes :S Ugh...I should of boiled it...

So please help me if you can! :(

Right what do you feed the fish, what does it look like when they go to the toilet, can the fish maintain its balance in the water, are scales sticking out like a pinecone, just check there anus to make sure it not red and inflamed, water stats as black fins also can mean ammonia burns, any lump or bumps as that type of fish is prone to ulcers.

Right what do you feed the fish? flake, bloodworm and brine shrimp

What does it look like when they go to the toilet? brown/black poop

Can the fish maintain its balance in the water? yes

Are scales sticking out like a pinecone? nope, so it's not dropsy

Just check there anus to make sure it not red and inflamed? not red or inflamed

Water stats as black fins also can mean ammonia burns? I got the medication in the
water now so I cant do any tests although I don't think it's ammonia burns

Any lump or bumps as that type of fish is prone to ulcers? nope no bumps or lumps or ulcers.

edit: I did have some live plants in the tank but some died and were leaving a lot dead plant matter on the bottom of the tank so I ended up taking those live plants out and doing a really good gravel vac. The rotting plant matter could of caused the fin rot I'm thinking. I don't think it's ammonia burns.

The brimestimp and bloodworms are they frozen, try some shelled peas and daphnia, just to make sure it isn't constipation.

both the brine shrimp and the bloodworm are frozen yes. It's not constipation as the males fins were rotting away. I wish it were as simple as that. :/

Well yes you can get secondary infections are you using a bacerial med now, as if it is a bacterial desease that should be helping if the desease it hasn't progressed.

That's fine then if it is the beginning of swim bladder or dropsy that should take care of it, give the fish some shelled peas and daphnia to give the fish a good flush through, good luck.
