I can't figure out what is wrong with him- to my inexperienced eye it seems like he may have been injured by something, but I wanted other's opinions to make sure I am not dealing with something contagious. His dorsal fin is swollen and seems to be twice as thick as normal, ans has turned white, over-night. Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Does it seem like a possible tumor?
Hard to say exactly by the picture...

What types of fish are in the tank?
Is there anything sharp in the tank? that he may have injured himself on?

When did you first notice this? How long has he had this "injury"?

Thank you for your questions- I would be extremely surprised if it were a tumor, because whatever it is- litterally happened overnight. I am sorry the picture is not clear at all. THere is nothing sharp in the tank, and the only thing that may have bit him would be one of the tiger barbs, I have a school of 10 babies, but I can't even imagine that being the cause because they are so small still, the fin seems swollen, almost looking like an abcess of sometype.

I just need to know if I should be medicating him with something, or if I should be taking him back, he is my newest addition, I have only had him for about 1 week, so that is why I am concerned that I might have introduces some disease that I am unaware of.

I am not a big fan of taking the sick fish back because I think they just kill them (so I was told once).
I you can spare the time and money try to treat him in a smal quarantine tank of just a recipient with sort of lid where you can put a airline (you can find a little criter or something for a few bucks). If you don't have a tank/recipent with filter then do water changes daily and replace the amount of meds you think you washed off (use water from the cycled tank if it's clean). A little tiny heater would be good but I am afraid you might boil the fish. As you see a little quarantine tank would be good.
As you said looks like infection (overnight and abcess). I am just a beginner but based on my experience a combo Maracyn and Maracyn2 should make a difference. He will be safe with this combination even if it looks a lot to you. I have tried it on my bettas and one gourami. It's a 5 days treatment and should show improvement. If not it's not the right med. Mathematics will help to decide the dosage according with the quantity of water.
I don't know much but I've managed to save few fishes by now, thank God and Wilder advice.

Well yesterday morning I went downstairs to check on him and he was laying on his side on the bottom of the tank panting and gasping for breath. I took him out and set him aside with some water (not a hospital tank) but just to see what would happen until I could get off work and deal with it. When I got home from work that afternoon he was dead (which I had expected) and he had tons of cottony white strings (but they were stiff) coming out of him. I assume I have fungus in my tank now, and I don't know how it could have presented itsef in that manner- I had been watching him very closely for any chage and there was no fungus on him before. Needless to say I am treating the tank and I am crossing my fingers that my others don't come down with it too. Thank you to those who responded for the advice.

Sorry to hear that.
try to buy some meds to have them just in case at home (it's less stress like this).
