Hi all. Been lurking here a few times as a guest and thought might as well register and participate.

I have only been keeping fish for about 10 months and tropicals for about 4 months.

I am really rapt with it all and am addicted to my fishies!!

I do have one prob with one of my dwarf gouramis. He is looking pretty lethargic and has one of his pectoral fins plastered down to his body and is reluctant to use it and the other gourami has decided to start pecking at him. :(

Is he a goner or will he recover? Any comments appreciated.

Sorry, Trying to post in another topic :*)

Some info would be good on water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, how many gallons is the tank, plus how many fish and which type, what do you feed the fish, does he look bloated, also what does i look like when the fish goes to the toilet.

Answer the above questions first. I'd also like to know the sex of the other gourami with him and how long you've had them for. Also, what temp. is the water at, is he still eating and have you made any changes/additions recently to his tank?

Concidering your description and the fact that it's a dwarf gourami, the problem is almost deffinately an internal bacterial infection. You should isolate him in a cycled, heated (78 deg F is good) hospital tank (or bucket) and treat with a strong antibiotic immediately - if he's still eating an antibiotic food is best. From experience I know that this sort of thing is very common in dwarfs and is usualy fatal if not spotted and treated early enough. If he's lost his appetite it's almost deffinately too late to save him (but worth a try anyway). However, if he's showing any other symptoms, you may be lucky and be able to save him so don't give up and good luck!

Regardless, watch the other gourami closely for signs of disease as, usualy, when one becomes ill the others are soon to follow.

usually when a fish has its fins clamped its due to parasites. How long have you had him and any new arrivals after him?

I'm just throwing in something else to consider.
