I just noticed that one of my 3 spot gouramis is huge - it looks like it ate a golf ball and the head is mildly arched up. There's no pineconing and it's feeding normally. Is it pregnant or is it something I should be worried about?? I mean it (I can't figure out the gender - they swim too fast) is huge!!!

Gouramis are egglayers, so there's no possibility of pregnancy in the sense we know it. It is possible that, if the Gourami is a female, that she is gravid, which means full of eggs.

I suspect, though, that the Gourami is constipated. Try not feeding for a day and seeing what happens. Also, a thawed frozen pea cooked for a few seconds in the microwave, then cooled, then with the shell removed, should help. Peas are natural laxatives, and give the fiber needed to help clean out the digestive tract.

Hi Small Fry :)

If one of your gouramis bulges in the middle and you are sure it's not because it has dropsy, that is the female.

One of the easiest ways to tell the genders apart is to look at them from the top of the tank. From this view it's easy to see how the female's figure bulges in the middle while the males are thinner and taper smoothly from the head to the tail.

Since the 3 spot gouramis are just one color variation of the Trichogaster trichopterus, and the opaline and gold are others, take a look at this thread which very clearly shows the differences between the genders. I think it will help you confirm which of yours are which.
