Hi All,
Tonight I bought 2 freshwater Shrimp for alphies aquarium, there still acclimizing but he keeps going up to the bag fussing with them. Hopefully he'll see them as friends and not food lol.
Shrimp Questions
What do they need to be fed? How often? I heard there to be fed live foods?
Do they rapidly breed?
Will they both be alright in a 21l aquarium?
Thankyou for reading.

Cool you got them :D Hope Alphie gets on okay with them!

Unfortunately the only thing I know about shrimp is how to cook them so I'll let a more savvy person answer your questions lol!

They 'usually' just fed off left overs, as in fish flakes etc. I'm not to sure on this but you can feed them algea wafers.
Seen as there only 2, you have a 50-50 chance of it being male and female, so just wait and see :)
IMO 21l is fine for 2 shrimp.

Bet Alphies a happy Betta today, has he done the famous swim upto the bag and grin?

:)

I'll try to answer your questions but I've never had shrimps, just researched them:

They will eat algae, especially if you have live plants then they'll keep the leaves clean. Their diet should be supplemented with algae wafers and bloodworm/other meaty foods, frozen or live. They do breed well, but the Betta will eat the shrimplets anyway, and your 2 may be same sex anyway.
They'll be fine in a 21l, you could get 4-6 more :)

Thankyou all for your input, Alphie has been good with the shrimp, he did stare at them and open and close his mouth but then he turned away and he seems to like watching their movement. There so cute, they sort of scurrie and fly through the water. I only got the 2 as i didnt know how alphie would react. :)

If they were labeled 'Ghost Shrimp' and are clearish then they will most likely only breed in brackish water.

Oh i didnt check for a label, but the guy but on the registration form 'freshwater shrimp' i was so impressed because he was like i know they may just be shrimo but we like to make sure our fish go to proper homes etc, he filled in tank size, tank mates, how long its been set up etc! Impressive :D

What colour are they hun?
Clear-ish means you probably got Amano shrimp - they need s/w for the eggs to hatch properly and can then be put in brackish once the shrimplets metamorphosize (sp).
Shrimp will eat up any left over betta pellets, fish flakes, etc but will also appreciate a broken up algae wafer or catfish pellet too.
Mine will steal a whole piece of wafer and run away with it LOL

There see through, with sort of a brown line going down there back.

Sound like Amano shrimp :good:
If they are and if you do have a m/f pair the female will carry her eggs on her swimmerets (the back 5 pairs of legs) but they won't hatch in freshwater and will be discarded.
I don't know if single/all females will still get "saddled" (when you can see the eggs and they seem to be in the middle of the upper part of her back just like a saddle) or if that only happens when males are present.
