i bought an old used fish tank on the car boot for pennys.

i have clean everything and the tank it self, set it all up the way i think it should go, filled it with water.

but can i put fish straight into it? or is there a process you have to do?

not sure if i want fancy gold fish or tropical yet but the same question applys x

It's up to you really. A lot of people on this forum (myself included) encourage people to do a fishless cycle, info you need can be found here: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=113861

By fishless cycling you will give your fish a much better chance of survival.

If you do decide to do a fish in cycle, you will have to do a lot of water changes, also you said that you filled it with water. Did you put anything in it such as tapsafe?

If you do want to keep tropical fish you will also need to get a heater, and also if you don't have one a filter would be very handy as well

Well, it's up to you. I have kept goldfish for 3 years, and never did a fishless cycle, and they are all still alive, and helathy, and (touch wood) haven't had any illnesses. But i did do water changes for the first few months quite often.

If you do go for goldfish, you will definitely need to get a filter, because they are really messy compared to tropical fish.

Also how big is your tank?
