got a free tank today for breeding my killi fish and after keeping the fry in once hatch. got given a 3 gallon clear-seal tank with pump/filter and gravel and a few decorations. i have removed the gravel from the tank so the fish cannot lay its eggs in making it har for me to find them....i have seen a few sites sayin that people who breed a lot of killifish do not use heaters for the water they just leave it to adjust to rrom temp which is between 16-18 degrees C....would any or your suggest getting a small 25 watt heater for the tank???

thanks

If you have a heater you can control the temp, where you cant withuot one. For the money i dont even know why you are asking, if it aids in spawning or breeding then its an essential purchase

yea ime gunna goto the fish store i use today and like you say for the small ammount of money the keep the water at a gd temp to aid raising the fry its worth doing. it just supprised me when i read about people doing it without heaters thats all.

People who don't use heaters either have a fish room kept at a high ambient temperature or like an old friend of mine he keeps the room the tanks are in (bedroom) quite warm, over 27c, so none of his tanks have heaters for this reason.

well both of my tanks are in my room and like you say it does get rather hot when tv, pc etc are running and also have the hot water cylinder in corner of my room so i think its safe to say i could do without a heater but then again my rooms not like a sauner at night so water could go a little cold.

A small thermostatic heater would be wise as it will kick in at night as you say your room cools down a lot at that time. Incidentally what are you attempting to breed as temperature is only one factor in sucess.
