Okay so I went to the LFS with my family and my boyfriend and we picked out a couple of fish. This is what we got:

female blue ram
5 glass cats
15 ghost shrimp
2 glofish (???)
1 black moor goldfish

Okay so I don't know anything about glofish and at first thought they were dyed danios..Can anyone give me any sites or anything that has good information on them? Or does anyone here own them?

I bought the black moor because he was being picked on in a tank full of cichlids. =( So I had to buy him. He will be in my 120 gallon so I hope he will be okay. I know they are supposed to have cold water temps but I had to get him, I fell in love. He is about 2 inches long and adorable! The temp in my tank right now is at around 72-74 is this *okay* for a goldfish?

GLOFISH........Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Why.......

I spose its up to the individual but they are inserted with a bright pigment so they glow in the dark, cruelty at its highest form, no offence. Its still sad though....

Anyways, hope all goes well with the new arrivals!

Im sure someone will be around here soon to give you a link to a glofish site. I dont have one handy. :dunno:

I turned out the lights and they didn't glow. I figured they were dyed but my boyfriend wanted them. :dunno: Anyways I can move the goldie to the 29 gallon.

Glofish aren't cruelly injected with anything, they have an extra gene added to them while they are in their eggs ;)

Aren't they the genetically modified fish? With jellyfish genes added? I think they're still banned in the UK so I don't really know much about them, except that they're meant to be sterile so that if they got into natural fish stocks they wouldn't breed and create mutant teenage ninja tetras or 3 eyed Godzillas, but people have actually bred them. The UK and Europe are vary wary of genetically modified stuff and it's pretty restricted - are glofish readily available in the US?

This was the FIRST time I have ever seen them so I didn't know anything about them. My boyfriend wanted let and since he was paying for everything he got them. They really have a lot of character. I have two of them and they are bright pink. They were the only 2 in the store.

I believe the eggs are given a special gene to make them "glow" and then they just breed those and their offspring "glow" as well. :dunno: Cheeky little buggers in the tank though. My red-tailed rasbora is quite interested in them.

The glow in the dark zebra danios are genetically modified. The fish don't suffer from it, but I would not buy them because they are A: tacky, and B: inbred.

And

C. I heard a percentage of money from buying a glofish goes to scientists so they can keep modifying these zebra fish to get them to detect pollution in the water. Like in clean water they will be regular zebras but in polluted water they will glow. :-(

Oh well, I like them and I think they are pretty. Plus, they needed a bigger tank to swim around in. They are darting everywhere!

Yes goldfish are avalable in the US. They sell them in like every fish store.
lol
As for glo fish, are they the zebra danio ones were talking about? Whatever the cause they have a gene that causes the glowing. As for the fish, move the gold fish to the 29!
