well I am not confident the LFS shop sold me a proper pairing! I know I have a male and female but I was told they are Apistogramma Macmasteri.

The female is yellow and smaller and the male is larger with a nice looking tail, its ok I will get pictures up soon. I got my first fish (6 neon tetra's) on saturday and they haven't stopped fighting (one died) and I was told that putting a bigger fish in would stop them fighting. So I went out and got my Apisto's and made a mistake because they are in my water which is ph8 and a little hard.

I am going to get some RO water tonight and do a 50% water change. Would this be the way to go ???

Thanks!!!

Thanks - do you think my Apisto's will be ok with my 35l tank?

I got loads of plants and bogwood and a few neon's and 2 cherry shrimp.

Well apart from Gnu, thanks a bunch for the lack of help!

i'm afraid to say i would take them back as they will not survive. apistogramma's need very soft and acidic water to do well and macmasteri fall into this category. a. borellii and a. cacatuoides are a bit more forgiving.
i've just noticed where you live, did you get them from wildwoods. i have had some from there. they do seem a little hardier from there but ph8 is far too high for them IMO

thanks Gnu, I was going to buy some R/O water today and gently bring the Ph and hardness down, do you think that would solve the problem?

I appreciate your help by the way.

it all depends on how bad you want them. water changes need to be done with ro water. if your tank is big this will cost a lot of money to keep on buying it as i found out with my 400L. have you looked at mbuna, Tanganyika's these would love your water and they have some of the best coloring of all the freshwater tropical fish
i've just seen your tank in your link and i see you like plants and am going for co2. it might be wise to go soft because i think you will have a better choice of plants that like soft ware than hard. you seem to be either extreme ends where something more in the middle would be easier. but then again the co2 will lower your hp but not the gh

Before you try and give cheek for lack of help, did you think about what time it was and what day it is? A good majority of the people on here "WORK" for a living thus the main working day is between 9-5pm. Maybe think before leaving comments like the above eh!

Now onto the fish, im confused why you would buy pair of fish without researching first. Id agree you should probably take them back and try to get something more suited to your water conditions.

Sorry yeah I been getting a little stressed out about the fish, I got apisto's because a few people told me they would be ok with a 35l (uk) tank. The water is wrong I know but its not a problem to use RO especially as its such a small amount of water.

There is a miky liquid in the corner of the tank and the male is defending it, I think it could be eggs but not sure.
