Hey guys, I go a red spotted severum for my 75g (a really really red spotted severum) and he seems healthy and all, but when he swims around, he sometimes has his nose pointed up a little. I don't see anything else wrong with him, but this behavior is rather odd to me. Is this a normal way for them to swim?

Pictures coming soon.

Probably in a different thread. I haven't posted any pictures of the 75 gallon or its inhabitants yet

I've seen severums do that quite a bit, always thought they were looking for food...

My big red Girl does it, she sometimes hangs completely vertical

No need to worry. My male red spotted does this quite often. I had to ask just like you did. Better to be safe.
Welcome to the world of severum. Any pictures?

mine is really greedy too. rips the novo tabs off the glass with ease.

got a few pictures

Thing was like 35 dollars for one reason or another  never thought as severums as the expensive kind; as I've seen green ones at petsmart for 5 dollars each. perhaps it's due to the color morph? Or did they just rip me off? (Wouldn't be surprised, the place I got it from was in a bad neighborhood)

Whatever the reasons, I'm already pretty attached. Was worried it'd be all diseased and stuff, especially since the person who got it didn't even have the courtesy to fill the bag enough to let it swim upright. But it seems perfectly healthy.

Any ideas on its true gender?

Red spotted severums are rare. I paid £40 for mine at 6 inches that's $62.50. as for gender, males tend to have a squiggly face and females tend to have a plainish face

there is light shining on her face buy you can see she lacks the thick squiggly lines, she has them but they are faint and thinner

this is supposedly a male, squiggly lines are very prominent.

female that (i don't own) the facial lines are very different to a male

this is what i was told when i bought my girl at the LFS so it could be wrong info on the sexing of red spots

The reason they're a higher price is because the majority of male red spotted severums are infertile so a person buying a 'breeding pair' may never produce fry as the males cannot finish the job. There is a thread on here where another member is lucky enough to get a proper breeding pair and has fry at the minute.

My red spotted were £15 each at around 3 inches. I did have to wait six months on them though, I ordered them with a small independant LFS and they were supposed to be there every week but never turned up.

The spots on yours 'should' fill out more at the end of the fish. It can be hard to determin sex when they're young. If you manage to get a proper side on shot then upload and we'll all try our best to help.

Have a look at rotkeil severum now if you get a chance.
