My question is, is it contagious to the extent that the whole tank has to be treated with meds or could he be seperated and treated alone?

Also what would be the best method of treatment? chemicals, higher temps, salt? I havnt had to deal with fungus before...

There are only the two mollies anf 4 platies in the tank but i dont really want to dd salt to the tank in case we want to add loaches later....what do you recommend??

(we have a cycled 5 gallon tank that he could be treated in if necessary, although it has platy fry in at the moment they could go in a breeding net in the main tank for a while if that was the best way to treat him)

If the possibility is there to isolate the fish i would do so. and treat with a fungus med. Watch the remainder of the fish carefully and if it looks like the fungus is spreading then treat the whole tank. HTH :)

The fry from the hospital tank are now in a big breeding net in our 120litre and the male sailfin has gone into the 25litre hospital tank with some meds. Im hoping the meds dont hurt the snails that are breeding voraciously in there but will have to wait and see. I'll let you know how they all do!

hope it all goes well.

check the label on the meds, some will say if they are or not safe for use with snails and such. if you use salt, you may lose some of those snails. but if you just use melafix and some other fungus meds, if its safe for snails, you probably won't have a problem. i lost all my tetras, but those crazy snails hung on....

Things arent looking good :( The male has been isolated and medicated (although I found 2 sneaky fry hiding in the tank after medication which have now been removed)

The fungus on his side looks lots worse today, its puffing out from his bidy and he has his fin clamped to it. I've also just noticed white spot on his sail fin :( Poor guy, he must have been kept in some pretty horrible water at the aquarium, I wont be shopping there again -_-

Edit: Just got a photo:

Oh well, we put him to sleep this morning :(

His fin had rotted down to the stump and he was lying on the gravel on his back just about breathing so we put him out of his misery.

Bye bye fishy, he didnt even have a name yet :byebye:
