Ok i promise this is the last question, I have a pregnant female platy who is heavily preggers, she has been hiding last couple of days, the same as my mollies did just before they gave birth, I have a breeding trap which I am a little reluctant to put her in, my question is, if she starts giving birth can I put her in it then?

I dunno...Pregnancy is a stressful ideal, giving birth is even more stressful, and in the middle of birth being stuck in a small place might be too stressful. It might kill her, so my question is, is the tank heavily planted? You could probably leave her in, and let her have birth in the plants, IMO. Java Moss is really good for baby livebearers. :good:

it's preferable to put her in a couple of days before she gives birth or don't put her in at all. The stress associated with being caught and stuck in a little container could be enough to upset her and interfere with the birth.

She will be totally fine in the trap, as long as you keep her in for no more thatn 48 hours..

Usually they are bothered by other fish especially males when ready to drop, putting them in the trap can reduce stress as she has her own space to not be bothered, ive used traps for years and still to this day have never had a fish die in a trap.

If your tank is very well planted then fry will survive but probably not all, a trap ensures you of a higher survival rate.. Put her in a trap and if she is ready to drop, you will find she will not fight to get out and will be very relaxed although for the first few minutes she may try..

The best thing i have learned is that when you put a fish in a trap, turn the tanks lights out and put a cover over the tank, they seem to relax quicker this way.

Good luck.

Hi Again

Well in answer to the question, yep the tank is well planted, I have decided not to use the breeding trap, I am hoping she has them today as she is still hiding away, my fish seem to like giving birth on a sunday

5teady, colin and gonga....many thanks for the info.

:flowers:
