I saw a beautiful betta in Pets @ Home and had to have him, but they told me on saturday he was off sale due to illness. The illness? "He keeps raising him top fin up" ?!?!? Lol I told them this was not a sign of illness but they were adamant :S Went back for him on Monday and they sold him to me. his tail looked tatty but I figured, this can be fixed. Got him home and realised he now had raging fin rot :S so i treated his q tank. He seemed OK if lethargic, but then he died yesterday :( The rot had moved so quickly it had reached the base of his tail and he haemorrhaged. :( Poor lil thing. I was really down about it and decided to go to an old favourite shop to have a peek at their bettas. I found one with the same colouration as the one who died, but he is much healthier and more vibrant! I had to have him. His tail is a bit nipped but nothing major, and he is happy and inquisitive. I got him home, cleaned the q tank and popped him in. He's going in his own Clearseal in a few days, a neighbour gave me a 18" by 10" one that just needed resealing so just waiting for the silicone to cure :) Anyone know anywhere that sells cheap lids for Clearseals? The lid is a bit bashed :)

Anyway, here he is. Not the best pics taken through scratched plastic :p but you can see how beautiful his colouring is - though he is more vibrant! I always wanted a purple betta!

Wow he is lovely... I would buy him too if it was me. I saw one like this in Pet @ Home in my area, but wasnt as bright as yours, was going to get him but looks a little ill and didnt want to risk it... So got my bubbles instead :)

THose lfs are so irritating sometimes! How many times do people like us have to tell them FISH CANNOT LIVE IN THOSE CONDITIONS. :grr: :grr:

Nice fish, though. :)

That sounds very much like the first fighter had Neon Tetra disease, Fighters are so so so prone to it, ESPECIALLY if the shop is keeping them on a system because it spreads so easily.

It will look like fin rot, first signs are a slightly tatty tail, the tail will usually go a slightly paler shade as it works its way up to the body, depending on the strength of the fighter, some die by this point others last longer and their back end of the body goes pale as it carries on working its way up, paralysing them as it goes.

Fin rot affects fish much slower than neon tetra disease...

Keep an eye on your new little beauty!

I know what you mean Plattygirl. I seen them in LFS with tetras (Which are nippy) i once saw at southern aqautics 3 males together... they seemed to be alright because there was a boss and they were keeping to themselfs but thats not the point !!! Bubbles was in with glow light tetras and I was glade to see him out of there !!!

description of Neon Tetra disease sounds about right, and he was being kept with tetras... what can you treat this with? I'd like to know for future :)

Sorry to hear of your loss.
You could try making a lid?
Glad to see you have another.
Also you could cut a condensation tray to size and use that?

I'm still racking my names for a name for him. Am considering Berry.... anyone got any good purple-related names that aren't too girly? Or any good Betta names in general?

He's in a new tank now, with gravel, plants, a large rock and a coconut cave. Need to sort a proper lid - am currently using clingfilm, lol, as the bashed up hood I had for it will not fit on the dresser the tank is sat on! Probably gonna get a condensation tray to use, and a decent desk lamp to light it. So I will take some decent pics once it is lit as it is quite dark right now! But he loves it, especially the cave :p

Awww he's a sweetie.

I have to say i rescued my (now injured) Radish from a tank of silver sharks. And The Captain was suffering from depression in a tank filled with all sorts over the months he was there mostly very nippy tetras. His depression is cured and his tail is healed but it will always look tatty. I dont care he's still beautiful.

Radish is currently on half dose melafix for a week as well as his tank being in a mini cycle  . The poor dear has injured one of his gills, i think he'll be ok he's just a little woozy from the melafix (still eats like a flippin pig though, he even steals the kuhli loaches algae wafers).

It's so sad that due to the ignorance of humans so many bettas die. I think they are one of the most ill treated fish ever sold ( them and goldfish). I'm sorry your other little guy didnt make it. At least he could live out his days in a quiet tank and you did all you could.

On an up note Berry is a really cute name! I'd be tempted by Murasaki which is japanese for purple :good:

Good luck with the little cutie and btw Lotus has an amazing tank

WOW! :hyper: He looks like my Azumo's brother! Though the red on yours' fins is more pronounced. Mine is also a veil tail with an indigo blue/purple body and more purple colored accents on the fins. I will HAVE to find a decent camera, so I can send you a picture. :snap: Your fish is absolutely GORGEOUS!

By the way I really like Murasaki. I searched on-line in regards to names/purple and found a couple of interesting things:
PORFIRO is a Spanish male name that means purple.
Jacaranda is a plant with purple flowers, so that could have a male form of JACARAND.
Purple is considered the color of royality. (got any royal figure who's name you like?). It stands for both nobility and spirituality.
Going off on the "royal route" you can get into all kinds of things ...
i.e. Kendrick It is of Old English, Welsh and Scottish origin, and its meaning is "royal ruler; greatest champion". Surname used as a given name in the 19th century.

God only knows there are so many possibilities ...

Good luck. Hopefully something will jump out at you.

I look forward to seeing Azumo! :)

Thanks for the name info, it's gonna take me forever to name him, lol. It always does :) Main thing is, it has to be easy to say, or have a nice shortened version, cos I am constantly talking to my bettas! Past betta names have been Dave, Baby, Neptune (shortened - if you can say it is shorter - to Nippers! lol), Darth, Zeus. Current bettas are Splodge, Stylo, Fred, Blackbeard and Loki. So I don't really have a theme, do I? LOL. I have been thinking of something 'royal' but not found anything just right for him yet...
