Ameca Splendens AKA Ameca, Butterfly Goodeid
Natural range : Rio Ameca and Rio Teuchitlan in the rio Ameca basin in jlisco, Mexico.
Size: Up to 8cm (3.2") for males, Females reported upto 12cm (4.7"), but usally smaller.
Food : All Commercial diets and livefoods accepted, a vegetable component must be included.
Tank Conditions: this is a lively species which can be kept in a group. it is generally tolerant of other species, but some specimens can become fin nippers and are best kept away from fancy-finned speices. The tank should have an open swimming space and thickets of plants. A cover of surface vegetation is also recommended as a shelter for new born fry. Good illumination and filtration should be provided. Water chemistry is not critical, but alkaline, medium-hard water conditions help to bring out the best colouration particually in Males.
Temperature: 20-29 degrees C, with something in the region of 22-25 being adviseable for generall maintenance.
Breeding: Broods of over 40 very large fry can be produced every 8 weeks or so during the breeding season. However average broods are generally smaller than this.
Characodon Lateralis AKA Rainbow Goodeid
Natural Range: Widespead in the upper Rio Mezquital in Durango,Mexico.
Size: Around 4cm (1.6") for males, around 5.5cm(2.2") for females.
Food: Will accpet freeze-dried, frozen a dried foods, prefers livefood diet and should recieve regualr vegetable suppliment.
Tank Conditions: This a shy, retiring species which should be kept as a shoal in its own aquarium. Alternatively, it may be kept with other quiet species. HEavy plant cover should be provided, along with relativly subdued lighting, bets acheived by means of thick layer of surface vegetation. Regular partial water changes are important, but not vigourous power filtration. The water should be slgihtly to moderatly alkaline and medium-hard.
Temp: 20-24 Degrees C
Breeding: Small broods, usually numbering fewer than 20 fry, are produced at 8 week intervals.
Xenotoca Esieni AKA Orange/ Red-tailed Goodeid
Natural Range: Various Places in Mexico
Size: Around 6cm (2.4") for males , around 7cm (2.8") for females...larger sizes are sometimes reported
Food: Widerange of commerical formulations and livefoods accepted, diet must include vegetable component.
Tank Conditions: An acitve species that needs to be provided with open swimming space, bordered by thick vegetation. This species exhibits fin nipping tendencies, particually with increasing age and is bets kept away from tankmates with elongated tails. Does best in roomy, well lit aquarium with numerous shelters. Water should be well filtered and slightly Agitated. Although a range of conditons are accepted, alkaline, moderatly hard water is recommended.
Temperature: From as low as 15 Degrees C to around 33 Degrees C, Something around 25 Degrees C is recommended for maintainence and breeding.
Breeding: although nearly 80 fry have been reported, a brood size of 30 is more common. The interval between broods is 7 - 9 weeks...depending on enviromental conditions.
