Im just wandering as how you would persuade someone that you need to upgrade your tank, any good excuse is welcome...

Who are you persuading, like family/relatives or someone you are going out with etc? Are you upgrading to give you fish more room or because you want more fish or because you just want a bigger tank etc :) ?

Well, i want to upgrade so i can get more fish and for them to have more room. Im persuading family.

If your living with your parents, you cannot argue with their final descision on the matter as it inevitably comes down to who pays the bills for the place.
However, you can convince them a lot easier if you express how much better off your fish will be with a bigger tank- if your family is concerned about space, you can opt for a taller tank rather than a longer one.
Point out how nice the tank looks or how pretty the fish are, tell them how much better fish are than like cats or dogs, which are much more expensive and messy animals to keep.
Making sure you save up and pay for everything will also help convince your family a lot more, as if you are trying to get someone else to pay for the expenses, it will make it so much more harder to convince them that a bigger tank will be a better thing.
If you havn't got a job, getting one will also help massively in impressing your family on how committed you are to your fish keeping and how badly you need a new tank.
Help around the house and stuff, keep your room tidy and don't cause any trouble etc etc- inevitably, if you do this, you are going to get the tank especially if you pay for everything, the only excuse they can use against you to not getting a tank is the space issue. But as previously noted, you can always opt for a tank that is not much longer than your current one but is instead much taller so it wil still gain many gallons more :) .

get them to really like and take an interest in the fish.... and then tell them for them to be happy and well they need a bigger tank.

or

get them to start really liking a fish you haven't got..... then tell them to get a bigger tank so they can have they're favourite fish too.

:D

Thanks for the help, yes i am paying for everything myself and have done so far. The helping around the house bit will help ALOT. Thanks again.

Glad to help :) - different stuff you can do around the house or family which may help a lot in convincing your family you are serious about getting a bigger tank, like doing vacum-hoovering or sweeping/washing the floors, shaking out carpets, making meals from scratch, tidying up the garden (if you have one, jobs like weeding or mowing the lawn will help a lot), making cups of tea/coffee for your parents, keeping your own room tidy etc.
Changng any lightbulbs in the house is good too, as well as giving everything a thorough dusting and wiping the windows clean and washing the dishes etc.
If you have any other pets like a dog, taking it out for long walks is also good too. You have a whole house at your disposal to do work on to help convince that family that fish keeping and big tanks is the best thing since sliced bread- and if you help out the family at home, everybody will be happy :) .

Here's mine...

"My room needs decorating, there fore im going to have to move the tank, also the tank is extremely old so i do not think it will last without leaking, so i need a new tank, therefore if i am going to get a new tank i may aswel make it worth the while and treat the fish to a bigger one, as they are not getting any smaller so will need a bigger environment shortly."

Now that's a good one!

I'm lucky in that while I still live with my mom, we're at the point where we're roomates rather than mother/daughter....

So I just brought a tank home one day and set it up. Never said anything about it either way. I catch her in here sometimes watching the fish, so I don't think she's too upset by it.

However, if you're still completely dependant on your parents, don't do this. I haven't moved out yet because she covers my bills and of course the number one reason - where am I going to find an apartment that'll let me have sven cats? I've doomed myself to living at home until I die.... :shout:

well here is my little story for u. well i told my mom and dad i wanted a fish tank. well they thought a little 10 gallon tank or maybe 20. well when i walked in with a 55 gallon tank my mom freaked. she is like that is going in ur room not the family room. well i left it in my room for a week and then i went on vacation. when i came home she bought a stand for it and it was in the family room  and she was like so when are u going to fill it up with water and put fish in  . it took a little while but not she loves it and is like so when are they going to get bigger( the fish). i think if u get ur family involved it might help u out a little bit.
