Hello Lesley and welcome to the forum.

If you don't have your tank yet or if you just got it and haven't added fish, I would suggest you do a fishless cycle. It will mean you can't add fish for 2 to 4 weeks but will make life a whole lot easier on you and your fish. See the link in my signature.
