Hello all, after a lot of reading through the excellent starter guides on here I have signed up so I can join in too!
Late last year my girlfriend and I moved in to our first house, which gives me the opportunity to try my hand at fishkeeping. I've always been interested in tropical fish as my dad kept fish for years when I was growing up. I have been given one of his old tanks, a 30" long 29 gallon jobbie, which I am planning on refurbishing and setting up in my new home. The tank was a DIY tank built about 20 years ago by my uncle, its very sturdily made, I've tested it for water tightness it just needs some new trim on the corners to cover up the glue joints.
At the moment I'm planning on setting the 29gal up with some "beginner" fish for a year or two to get used to dealing with the water chemistry, cleaning etc, then replace it with a 55gal tank so I can keep some Lake Malawi cichlids (living in the south east of england we have fairly hard water).
so . . . I'm looking forward to chatting with you all and hopefully getting some good advice along the way!
