Hi all! My name is Dave, I live on the North East coast in Northumberland.

Right, where to start? I have an 80 litre tank, well established and has been going for years. Its balanced, but sadly now overstocked. My pair of angels have begun fighting as they have outgrown the tank, and since the temporary introduction of three young clown loaches to deal with a huge snail problem the fighting has worsened. Sadly one of my angels were killed (I did have three) I suspect by my breeding pair of Kribs, and so I have invested in a new, larger tank to move some of my fish into, leaving my Kribensis and a few small tetras so that the Kribs can successfully breed again.

Now, I am the sort of person that never, ever does things by halves. I am a firm believer that if you are going to do it, do it once and do it right. So I obtained a 945 litre tank so that the overcrowding problem was solved once and forever. Now, I am left with the question of what to stock it with. The tank is dry at teh moment and not cycled, but in my 80 litre tank I have a pair of angels, two Kribensis, three small clown loaches, four black skirt tetras, a columbian tetra and a bulldog plec. I plan to leave the kribs, the bulldog and the tetras in the smaller tank.

Now, I don't know a huge amount about other species of tropical fish, and what I know about mine is what I have learned myself. I am looking at what else to stock the larger tank with - anyone any ideas?

I love invertibrates, particularly the larger variety such as the cobolt blue crayfish and armoured filter shrimp - I know the crayfish have a reputation for eating other fish but in a tank of that size, would one or two of them be much of a hassle of the other fish given that (I am lead to belive) they are territorial? Also how would they do with armoured filter shrimp? I also love any and all turtles, though I KNOW they would be unsuitable to keep with fish!

What else is fairly easy to keep as a communal fish? Just looking for advice really! Anything anyone can tell me would be much appreciated!

Hi Dave

the new tank sounds great, what are the dimensions?

Everyone does seem to have different oppinions about keeping crayfish with fish but heres my opinion

Assuming that the tank is quite long you should be able to go for 1 or 2 cherax crayfish, provided you don't keep too many other bottom swimmers, The cherax crayfish aren't particular killers but if they can catch a fish they will do, so it is a good idea to not keep them with slow moving fish either. A tall tank could hold both the angels and the crayfish but there is always a risk.

Shrimp on the other hand are quite placid and you could stock many different types, Armoured, bamboo etc together with many community species from tetras, barbs, livebearers, gouramis, angels etc. Also if there is room for a land area in the tank you could maybe even add a few red clawed crabs or similar.

I had not considered crabs - I thought they were the aquatic equivilant of Houdini? That is a consideration though! Crabs, shrimp and a good number of small - medium fish. I like the sound of that!

The dimensions of the tank are a little over 96"w x 30"h x 20"d

I was beginning to lean towards a tank with lots of New World Cichlids, I have lots of bogwood around so that would be ideal. Maybe some plecos of various type too..? Would crabs or crays bother larger plecs and Cichlids? I'm thinking that crabs and crayfish would eat smaller shrimp wouldnt they? If I used crabs, and filled the tank to 2/3's with an island it would mean that the damn thing would weight lots less though!

Sounds like one long tank! and IMO a new world tank would look great,

with crayfish and plecs there is a big chance that the plec will get nipped at, also larger cichlids may often try to eat the crays so again its very risky to add all 3, this is also the same of the crabs

have you an idea of specific species you'd like to keep? with certain new world cichlids you could go along with a south american theme and add other species such as silver dollars, a variety of catfish and plecs, possibly an arrowana (depending on tankmates) etc.

No I am still in the planning stages and want to have a definate idea of what to add and in what order. I am beginning to think that inverts will be out completely, but we shall see. I have seen crays in a local aquatics shop near me which were very large bodily (roughly 8-10") but with very small, slender claws, leading me to think that they would be too well armoured for all but the biggest catfish, and their claws are too small to do damage to larger fish. Also, I figured on the tank being large enough with enough holes for territory etc for the inverts to hide.

But, as for species, I really have no idea yet. I prefer the look of African cichlids, but new world ones prefer the more acidic water with plated substrate and bogwood, which is the look I want to go for which is also ideal for the plecs. So I think New worlds are teh way to go, but whatever species I get must be happy to share with a pair of angels and a few clown loaches.

You might to go for some apistogramma's like blue rams, and cockatoo cichlids.
Hey Dave! :good:

The above sounds good :D I'd kill for some in one of my tanks

Re shrimps and stuff, I have some cameroon armoured shrimp...they're filter shrimp so can't harm any fish unless they tried to fan them to death. They grow to be 15cm long and are quite interesting characters :D

I can't WAIT to see this tank set up...you've been getting the suspense going rather well 'elsewhere' ;)

Ello! :good:  Aye, well, picking the tank up this Saturday fingers crossed, so it'll all start to come together then. I had some camaroon shrimp in my other tank, they did really well until my other half decided to use some copper balls to weigh some cucumber down for the snails and plecs, which polluted the water and they both died within 2 days of eachother. But tehy were HUGE when they snuffed it, I was tempted to eat tehm myself! lol! I'll get some of those for the new tank, but only once it's well established.

Well, filters to buy next! I'll get them on sat I think and begin cycling the tank just as soon as I've made a steel structure to support it. Out with the MIG welder I think! This'll be the first time I haven't used it on my Baja!
