Gonna Start Cycling A Betta Tank....few Q's Tho

Ok so I am gonna get a small 5G tank for a betta but I am gonna start the cycle today. I was just wondering, will it matter if I add the substrate during the cycle as opposed to at the begining?

No not really, although putting it in now would help as it will have a good bacterial culture on it.

What substrate is it? If its sand, until its all settled you will have to leave the filter off. This could be about 2 days.

I am planning on going with sand at the moment, i'm just being impatient cos i know the guy i want will be sold soon. I have no chance of getting him but it's kinda making me want to do everything as soon as possible lol. I will see if i can get sand today it's just there's not a lot of choice around and there isn't a Toys'r'Us near any more. Will see if i go anywhere near an argos to try them. Otherwise i might just fork out for expensive LFS sand
