Hi,

Over the last 4weeks 2 of my Zebra Danios have gone missing. The largest fish I have is a male pearl gourami, could he have possibly eaten it? Although he is sometimes a bit of a bully I have never seen him actually attack any of the other fish. If its not him any ideas how they can just dissapear? Any help would be appreciated.

They may have died then the cory's disposed of them in the middle of the night. What are your water parameters reading (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph)?

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 12.5
pH 8.0

ph has been high since setting up tank approx 3mths ago, tap water the same.

weekly 20% dechlorinated water changes

So, this was over a period of 4 weeks that they disappeared..... not both of them at once? Since your tank is new, it's quite possible that you didn't get healthy fish to start. I can't imagine anything catching one of these little buggers. They're so fast (I have 6 of them in my community).

What size tank and what other fish do you have in there?

125litre tank

Bronze corys, Platties, Zebra Danios and Pearl Gouramis

No not both at once, no bodies found despite thorough search!

I know that a few of my zebras are small enough that they could actually get stuck in the filter. If you don't have any decorations that they could've gotten stuck in (but your water results would've been funky I think), then you have no choice but to believe that something ate them. -_-

I don't know anything about gouramis. Any chance there?

My Gourami is a bit of a bully sometimes, but I'm not sure that he is that agressive that he would kill and eat a Danio, but of course I could be wrong.

I'll have to try and keep a better eye on him, but is probably happens at night or while I'm at work.

do you have little hidey-holes in your tank where the zebras can fit in but the gourami can't?

I don't know what to tell you. I'd build up your zebra school again. There's safety in numbers. And could you get another gourami? Not sure what their stocking requirements/preferences are.

Edited to add: I forgot to ask how often you feed. When I introduced my zebras to my tank (last fish to go in), the mollies and tetras were sure they were just live food. I immediately dumped some brine shrimp in the tank and everybody forgot about the zebras. And they haven't gone after them since.

Gourami went in last. Feed flakes everyday and sinking pellets (small pinch of each) and as treats bloodworm and brine shrimp (just once a week).

Thanks for all your help. :thanks:
