I live near a golf course, so i always find tons of golf balls in or near by backyard (more than i can play with). I was thinking around 50 of them would make an interesting golf themed tank substrate for my 33 gallon livebearer tank. Has anyone ever tried this? any reason why it would'nt work? I figure it would also create great hiding spots for fry. Thanks in advance

i have not seen it used or used it myself but cant see how it would be a bad thing what are golf balls made of lol

So long as they aren't cracked its absolutely fine. They are designed to remain inert in water.

I've even met someone who used old golfballs as filter media in a gian pond filter.

Would look a little strange though!

Would not be any good if you have bottom feeders such as corys etc as food would sink between the balls and be impossible to access

If its just livebearers then it may be ok providing they are getting enough food before it starts to sink.

Thanks for the info guys, im gonna try putting a few in there to see how it looks now that i know they arnt harmful. Cheers

Gravel vacuuming will be very difficult. I would imagine you would have lots of rotting food that will be difficult to remove if the entire substrate was golf balls.

maybe instead of going all golf balls have gravel and a few golf balls to make cleaning easier? or you would have to pull all the golf balls out to get the crap at the bottom lol

just a suggestion
