my mom wants a fish for her office (well, i talked her into it :hyper: ) but on the weekends, they turn the heat down to 50F. she originally was going to get a betta, but it can't handle that cool of water - she was gonna get a bowl with a plant in it - so she thought maybe a goldfish. how cold can their water get?

they could live with 50f as long as the water doesnt freeze into a block of ice

i had goldfish in smaller things than that before. when i was little. not the hugeeee goldfish, just a goldfish goldfish.

Even the smallest common goldfish can get up to 8 inches long or larger. And, if she's going to keep a plant in there, remind her that goldfish eat plants :) Oh, and if there's no filter, she'll be doing lots of water changes, because they are messy little devils :)
Just some stuff to keep in mind.

Dont put a goldfish in a bowl, its cruel and unnecessary.

Goldfish only stay small because they get stunted in small tanks and die quickly. All goldfish grow to around a foot if given the chance.

If she wants a fish for her office then buy a proper tank, maybe 3 gallons and a heater and small filter and get a betta.

id have to second that.

a small heater wont cost much from ebay either and its handy to have even if the room is warm cos im sure the temp would drop sometimes and it would stop the betta gettin stressed due to temp fluctuations everyday.

I'm with you if you read my introduction in newbies section i restarted fish because of a fish in a bowl now that gold fish is 20cm in a 100 lit tank
