We have a 4-inch Oranda and would like to get him a tankmate. Would it be a problem to introduce another smaller Oranda?

How large a tank? Do you have a quarantine tank for the new fish? Normally size difference in goldfish isn't an issue providing one isn't small enough to be swallowed.

Yeah goldfish are messy, heavy bodied fish. I wouldn't put more than one in a 25 gallon tank.
One 5" goldfish produces far more waste than 5 1" fish.

I agree and so do most serious goldfish keepers. 20 gallons per fish is considered bare minimum with many advocating doubling that for the first fish.

We'll, that gives me something to think about. We have a small place, 40 gallons would likely be the maximum we'd have room for.
For now, I'll keep a close eye on the water and do frequent water changes.

We got the other fish. It's 1/3 the size. They're getting along swimmingly.
