So I was working at the fish shop today dishing out small comets for feeders to a customer when I noticed a really neat black and white comet. So I snagged him because he looked so cute and I had never really seen a comet that was primarily black and white with just a smidgen of orange.

Anyway, the question is this: I have a ten gallon tank but it's got a couple platties and small school of tetra in it. The goldfish is in a bowl now but I was wondering if I could put him in the ten gallon short term. If I leave the lights off the tank only gets to be 75 degrees. I understand that the heat doesn't bother the goldfish so much, but the ammonia it puts off could hurt my tropicals. I was wondering if keeping him in there short term would kill my other fish.

We're smack in the middle of building a bigger pond so he'll have roomier accomodations soon. We have a barrel pond (50 gal) but I don't want to put him in there because we've got a turtle an at this point the fish is so small he'd be lunch. When the big pond is finished up the turtle will go in it (along with the bigger goldfish) and the little new guy will get a chance to grow in the barrel pond.

I'd like to not keep him in a bowl and would rather stick him in the 10gallon if it wouldn't mean instant death to my platties. What say you?

for the short term, yes. commets can take a temp range of 32-90 ºF but do prefer the coller end of the scale.
just be perpared for lots of water changes in the 10 gal, due to the amount of waste he will make.
the quicker you get the large pond finished the better.

yup i agree. the less time he spends in the 10 gallon the better.

well, having a goldfish in a tropical community dosen't nesasarly kill the fish. my old goldfish was in a tropical tank for two months and was completely fine!

My cousin has had a goldfish in his community tank for over a year!

yeah he will be fine for a short amount of time, just remember that godfish are opertunistic and will eat anything they can fit in their mouths!
