I rescued 7 goldfish, plus some other fish (long story) and I'm getting a 50 gal today which is the biggest tank i have that isn't being occupied. So how long will that be ok for 7 comets? (I think they're all comets.. but I'm not sure how I'm supposed to tell?). Once they're large enough not to get eaten by other animals/fish I'm going to put them in my gigantic pond. That will have to be spring/summer even if they're big enough before then (which I doubt, some of them are very small) since the temp change would be too much. I know that how fast goldfish grow depends on condition of water, DNA, tank size, etc but how fast is average? Will cranes/great blue herons, etc be able to eat 1 ft long goldfish? Anyway I can prevent birds from eating my fish? I've had troubles with them before and basically running them off I dunno what will scare them away.

they will be fine in there until you can move them in the spring as long as you make sure its heavily filtered , goldfish are extremly messy fish and ammonia will build up quickly
have you got a currently cycled filter you will be using
if not the fish mght not survive a fish in cycle unless you do 50% water changes at least 3 times a week and keep feeding to a minimum

in the spring all you do to acclimatise the fish is float them in a container and gradually add pond water to the container while removing the tank water from it this will ensure they get use to the water temp and any ph difference

when i had my pond i used plastic covered metal 2cm squared sheets over the top of the pond when i wasnt in the garden wishing to enjoy it , this was secured via rocks , and easily removed , that way cranes etc couldn't pinch my fish

what are the other fish that you rescued are they also coldwater fish as you shouldnt mix cold and tropical fish

My pond is a large retention pond so I have no way of securing it to keep out predators.

I also rescued 1 snail, 1 pleco, 1 zebra danio, 5 neon tetras, 3 black neon tetras, and a puffer but it died from the stress of bringing it home 4 hrs after I got it :(

The apple snail, zebra danio, and tetras will be going in a 20 gal tall, if that's big enough. ( I was told that I could have 5 zebra danios, 8 tetras, and the snail in a 20 gal tall). And I want to get the zebra some friends later on once I get my tanks cycled.

Do you think my goldies will be big enough come spring to be released in the pond? I don't want anything happening to them :(

have you got a currently cycled filter you will be using

No, I'm trying to get my tanks cycled. right now, all these fish are in the 5 gal and 2 gal they came in because I need to cycle the tanks first. I'm going to use septo-bac to try and speed up the process. Tomorrow I'm going to try to get dechlorinator, water conditioner, and a test kit and have my dad get the 10 gal stand out of the garage (I'll have to use 10 gal for the tetras and danio becuase i don't have a stand yet for the 20 gal but all these fish all very small still). Then I'll get the septo-bac and start cycling the tanks.

as i understand septo bac is meant to help speed up cycling i'm not sure if it is actually any good you might be best to add the filters , dechlorintaed water - the septobac (in case it does help) , get the tanks to temp then add the fish and do the water changes every other day while still testing the tanks

you might lose the neons as they are very fragile fish and usually dont do well in anything less than a well matured tank

i wouldnt get any more zebs until the spring then move all the fish into the 50gallon when the goldies move out

as for the pond as long as the pond has plants with plenty of cover the goldies should be ok , they will be far better in the pond than staying in the tank where they will quickly become stunted - if you want them to last their lifespan then put them in the pond in the spring these are fast active fish that need a lot of space

comets can grow to 24" in length and are very fast swimmers it is recommended by a lot of sites that they should never be kept in aquariums but if they are minimum 30 gallons for the first fish and 20 gallons there after (fancy goldfish 20 gallons first fish and 10 gallons there after)

how big are the comets now?

The largest goldie is 3 inches long. another is about 2 1/2 and the rest are hardly 2 inches long. I'm not positive if all 7 are comets though. one is shaped different, kinda rounded instead of long..

I had septo-bac recommended to me on another forum as well as bio-spira but sincce septo bac is cheaper I'm using that.

I'm afraid to not cycle the tanks though as I don't want to lose any of them. for now, they're surviving in these tanks and did for a long time before i got them so surely another 2-4 wks or so couldnt hurt. i just don't want to do anything rash that i'll regret.

just do frequent water changes with that many fish in small tanks they need frequent water changes - do they currently have filters on the little tanks?
if they do you could add the filters from these tanks and run along side the new filters this way you would only get a mini cycle and the septo bac should sort that out
if they currently have no filtration i cant see the neons lasting very long at all

the goldies are quite a size at the moment so would be ok to add to your pond in the spring , when you said small i was thinking around an inch

Both the tanks have filters. No heaters though because of the goldfish.

Yeah, ok I'll do that asap

Thanks for your help!

make sure you get heaters for the tropical fish when you can

cheers
