Ok my friends mom was getting rid of her goldfish. They were in fishbowls with no gravel or filter so there can be no algea growth. She was going to flush them down the toilet and I told her i would tank them. I put them in my tank seeing that they would probably do better in there than in the fish bowl. My tank is not cycled but seeing that the bowls have no gravel or filter i think that they are better off in the tank. Do you guys think i made the right choice? Also i need some info asap on to how i can make there life better.

Me too - I think it is horrible to flush fish down the loo

Cannot give you much advise on putting fish in an non cycles tank though

Sorry

You made the right choice - not only is it incredibly cruel to flush live fish, its also illegal in many areas.

If you need any help to cycle the tank with the goldfish, just post any questions you may have. The article in my sig contains a section on how to cycle with fish - goldfish are pretty tough (even surviving flushing - and having a disasterous effect on wildlife) so they should be OK.

You did such a good thing, FishNewbie!

I know you were looking forward to tropicals, but goldfish are fine fish, too. They each have their own distinct personality and you will soon come to love them.

They are sad little things when they are alone in bowls. Now that they are all together in their big new tank they must be so happy!

P.S. I love your new avatar. It makes me giggle every time I see it!!!!

Well done fish newbie, i would of taken them but i'm in the uk. I already have 9 fantail goldfish living all together in one big tank and are doing great, so anytime you need advice on stuff just post on the board.

They love bloodworms by the way. Too much flake will bore them and make them constipated.

I definitely believe goldfish are under-rated - they are carp, which are among the most advanced and intelligent of fish, and they definitely have their own distinct personalities. Have fun!

Actually it is somewhat the opposite.

Goldfish are mainly herbivores. A diet to high in animal protein can cause them to get bloat.

A good vegetable flake or spirulina flake coupled with say bloodworms several times a week will be a very good diet for them. It is also a good idea to presoak the flakes in some tank water prior to feeding.

Goldfish are voracious eaters and will very often come to the surface to eat. This in turn causes them to take in excessive amounts of air into their digestive tract.

By pre-soaking the flake it will sink almost instantly enabling the fish to eat it from the water column instead of the surface.

If you decide to feed a pellet food (this will create a lot less mess) you should most definitely pre-soak the pellets. Pellets if eaten in large amounts quickly (by any fish, not just goldfish) while dry, will swell up in the digestive tract and this is what causes constipation!!

You can also include fresh veggies such as peas (without the shells). This will help keep the regular as well.

Keep the water temp lower than for regular tropicals and plenty of filtration as goldfish are indeed messy (almost as messy as oscars)

I have a similar tale and as you can see below I sucessfully introduced them into my tropical tankwith no Ill effects....as you you say its better than what might have happened.

Hello again, FishNewbie, :)

Another thing goldfish love to have in their tank is anacharis. This is a dark green, leafy plant that you can get at the lfs in bunches. It has no roots, but instead comes tied together with a lead band at the bottom. (If it has a rubber band too, take it off so the fish don't eat it) It's a very attractive plant that the goldfish eat like it was a salad.
