hi,
I had a goldfish in a water feature with a fountain in the garden for a couple of years,
for number of reasons I had to empty the water and I'm not sure what to do with the fish,
is it better to buy a tank and keep it indoors
or we were thinking of letting her go in the nearest duck pond?

I dont think ur allowed to let them go in the wild so a tank would be the better option. How big is she. Could help determine what tank to get her if at all. If she's too big then yes you will have to let her go in a duck pond but only as a last resort. This post would be better off in the coldwater section as the guys who hang out there know more about coldwaters than the ones in the emergencies section.

thanks a lot, I wasn't sure where to post, it's kind of emergency to the poor fish,
she's now dwelling in a big ice cream box:(
anyway, she's about 7 in (18cm)

A standard goldfish will require a tank of 6-8 feet in length, you're better off trying to rehome it in another pond.

I don't understand - until now I've only seen "small" aquariums stuffed with 7-8 goldfish
and I really can't wrap my mind around the idea that a single goldfish needs at least 100l tank...

100 Litres isn't sufficient, Goldfish can reach 18+ Inches in length, a 6*2*2 would suffice but a pond would be the best option.

those goldfish were probably small and when they get bigger the tank will become hidously overcrowded and the fish will become diseased and die. it's also like that as part of psycological advertising to make you want to buy more fish when you see it, why else do you think they decorate the selling tanks at shops. It is helpful then to know that goldfish will only grow to the size of their environment.
