Fish Crazy
Hi folks
I know this isn't a goldfish section but I've had such great advice from people on this forum that I thought I'd see if you can help.
This evening I noticed that our beautiful fantail goldfish is a lot less active. It's floating stationary in the tank for short periods, sometimes it's top fin (dorsal?) is down and it looks like it's constantly gasping. However, I don't think this has anything to do with lack of oxygen in the water as the tank is huge and is very well aerated. The fish is also NOT gasping at the surface. I also noticed that it managed to squeeze out a very long watery yellow looking poop (much unlike the usual goldfish poos). Water quality is good and there is another fantail in the tank which is fine. There are also 10 White Cloud Mountain Minnows in the tank and they are all healthy. No new fish have been added.
I fed the fish with a load of finely chopped cooked peas an hour ago on the off chance that it is constipated. It ate plenty of them without a problem but then puked up one piece about half an hour after eating it. I have had a goldfish with a swim bladder problem before and this doesn't seem to be the same thing. Occasionally it's tail will twitch weirdly... I've never seen that before today.
The only other thing I can think of is that it might have swallowed a stone. Both goldfish are always sucking up stones from the bottom and then spitting them out. I'm just wondering if it accidentally swallowed one and that the "gasping" may be the fish trying to get the stone out.
Do any of you have any advice? I'm really worried. My kids will be devastated if the worst happens.
