Over the past week and a half, my goldfish has dramatically changed colors. He is a fantail, and was a dark color, not as black as a black moore typically is, but his coloring looked a lot like this fish:

I was out of town for about a week, and when i came back, he looks like a different fish! Now, he has a mottled appearance, with some orange in his face and a pale silver color creeping up from his belly. His back is still dark. Does anyone know what is going on here?

It is quite normal for goldfish to change colour as they mature. As long as the colour change is not fuzzy or furry looking (if it is it might be a fungal infection) and the fish is behaving normally, I shouldn't think you have anything to worry about.

We used to catch goldfish fry from my mum's pond and grow them on in a tank, and they alawys started off a sort of bronze colour. Then orange would spread out from the belly until they had orange bodies and black fins and patches on the face, then the black would grow out and the white patches would appear. It was a fascinating process to watch.

i agree with the above. they are born black, and as they grow up they change colour. my granddad used to breed goldfish in his pond, and he collected the eggs. occasionally he'd get one or two that never changed colour.

did you have someone looking after it while you where away? because they could have killed it by over feeding, and bought a new one!

OMG! I'd never thought of that...

LOL.

Most of my goldfish haven't changed colour but some have changed a little and some have completely changed colour...I had a lovely orange one who turned white (lol it's my oldest one so I joke that it's just gone grey).

Ha ha, in fact, my very FIRST thought was that my fish had died while i was gone and someone replaced it. But, no, that didn't actually happen. I'm sorry that he is loosing his pretty, dark bronze coloring, but i'm interested to see how he evolves.
