Hi,

Being new to this, and still in the cycling phase I'm wondering which kinds of fish to eventually introduce to my tank.

At the moment I have two Platies in there, they're doing a great job cycling. (Or should that be something else ending in 'ing!?') :D

I really like the look of Rams though, and my LFS has Golden Rams in particular currently in stock.

Would one be fine in a communal tank? They look so comical! :D

Yes they can go in community set up.
However, i recommend you wait to you are finish cycling.

They are easy to keep once you have established good water quality

I have German Blue Rams in my tank, and they don't go anywhere near my tetras or cories. They're pretty peaceful, actually.

According to my LFS, the Golden Rams are also pretty peaceful, and they were kept in the same tank as my rams.
You should be fine as long as your pH is appropriate, and your water params are good. :)

If you go with rams, go with Geman Blue Rams. Their peaceful, and colorful. The only thing my male ram does is chase the female ram from time to time. Secondly what size tank do you have. One pair can fit in 20 gallons and nothing less.

Blue rams and Gold rams are in effect one in the same, just a color difference. but as loachlover said rams are sensitive and will do a lot better once the tank has been fully established. Also as frank3333 said they get along with his tetra, they get along great, but can quickly become quite the bully if they spawn. Even to fish twice there size. If your tank is large enough there terrritorialism* will be lowered and they will do fine.
What size tank, and more important to rams how long is it? As they tend to stay from the middle down in the aquarium. Mine don't even come up to the surface to feed anymore since I got some sinking food for them.

BTW wonderful fish my personal favorite!

* is that a word?
