golden barbs

A very nice, peaceful fish. I like them. Cruises around the lower half of the tank. Easy to feed, eats pretty much anything, but likes some vegetables.

Originally called Barbus schuberti as it was thought to be a species. More recently it is regarded as a yellow colour morph of Barbus semifasciolatus.

Females are larger than males and have a sprinkling of small black spots. Males tend to have more spots which frequently merge to form more like a row of bars or dashes. In good condiotions, males develop a reddish tint to the lower body. Both sexes will show blood spots in the fins and on the body if the water conditions are poor.

Well conditioned adult fish spawn readily in typical egg scatterer style. The fry are not large, but don't present any particular problems.

Was there anything specific you wanted to know that I didn't cover?

thankyou, i was wondering whether they would suite my community tank (2nd 50g in sig) they are hardly ever mentioned or recommended so i wonderd whether there was something wrong with them or if they are over looked

I have 7 golden barbs, ryan. I love them! They have a really subtle but beautiful colouring that's unusual in freshwater tropical fish. Lateral Line's description of them was, of course, 100% accurate. I caught mine depositing eggs all over the plants in the lower regions of my tank a couple of weeks ago. The only thing I will say is that I occasionally catch one or two of the largest females taking a nip out my angel's veiltail, but it's nothing serious.
